Moving on…

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

In response to our competitor’s willingness to stop the blog war, we want to reiterate that as a company we do not like to indulge in blog wars or any unwarranted mudslinging. We were just provoked by RBS’s constant focus in attacking our product and company without full understanding of what we are. We apologize if we hurt anyone personally in this avoidable blog war.

As a company we are down to earth to the point that we even feel uncomfortable beating our own drums leave alone indulge in mudslinging or attacking a competition with creating FUD about them. We feel that the best judge of a product/solution or a business itself is the customer in a competitive marketplace. And we will simply continue to relentlessly focus on proving ourselves by delivering a world class product accompanied by a world class service.

On Paternity Claims and Sundry Other Rants…

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

I ran into an especially long-winded post in a competitor’s blog – it is very confused even by the standards of someone who claims paternity for the ‘online backup industry’.   Initially, I thought it was just the phrase ‘online-backup’, but later it transpired that it was the whole industry for which parentage was being claimed.   Much the same thing happened with me when one day in 1993, I asked my friend near the refrigerator, ‘(We) Got Milk?’ and thereby INVENTED the phrase ‘Got Milk?’.  AND pasteurization.  AND the whole dairy industry.  Giggle.

I wouldn’t have written this post hadn’t it been certified as ‘good entertainment’ and a ‘GREAT sport!’ by the CEO of Remote-Backup.

Firstly, I thank Rob for his admission about the goof-ups he has made in his claims on our product in his website (yes – you read it right. Stuff written about STOREGRID on RBS website; I too didn’t believe it when I heard! Note: this is not their forum I am talking about here).  But surely sir, it beats me why there should be pages and pages of RBS’s ill-conceived notions and baseless opinions on Vembu StoreGrid on your website.

Admitting two of the baseless comments that are hosted on your site is commendable, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Wait, the post gets better.  He goes on to claim that he studied Buddhist and Hindu philosophy (!).  Too bad I don’t know what these are, because it could have prepared me for what came on next.  What then followed was an absolutely hilarious exposition of his philosophy using an analogy of climbing mountains, snow, gravity and few other sundries.   But I was left truly impressed with the vivid analogy actually.  Honest.

(Note to self:  Re-read the analogy for tips when packing for next trekking trip).

Somewhere in the depths of these mysterious oriental philosophies that Rob has mastered, perhaps lie the reasons for keeping a closed forum for RBS partners.  I am not going to unearth any meaning out of the following quote – except maybe note that it sounds suspiciously like a convenient excuse for keeping adverse partner comments ‘private and privileged’ or maybe that the forum is way too dull to be admitted publicly.

“Vembu’s forum is used for technical support, including support of evaluation customers and those who are not Service Providers. Mine is not. Vembu relies on help from their few service providers to offer support. I do not. My forum is specifically intended for my own Service Providers to swap ideas and resources about marketing, business practices, pricing, and yes, some technical issues. But it is not used for technical support, and the conversations therein are private and privileged among RBS Service Providers only, and not the general public. Therefore, my Service Provider’s Forum should be private. “

One can only conclude that all the aforesaid philosophies in the repertoire of the esteemed author didn’t include any injunctions on ‘Free Speech’.   So much for claims of being the only American firm in an imagined competitive array – or perhaps there is an exception for those with paternity claims on the whole thing lock, stock and barrel.

It’s not geography, but the spirit with which one works that matters.

On the contrary, the Vembu StoreGrid forum is home to lively discussions on all topics listed above and not just technical issues (and since the forum is open, one can actually verify this!).  But yes, we haven’t had a thread on philosophy yet though. Nor one on trekking uphill in the snow…

As for our technical support, the Vembu technical support team works 24×7 for both our partners and prospective (evaluating) partners.   Our technical support includes  support through email, phone, instant messenger and remote sessions.  We have never informed our evaluating service provider partners that technical support is only through forums.  StoreGrid users will vouch for the fact that on occasion, even premium support options like telephone/remote sessions have been offered to partners and evaluating partners alike for their convenience.

I was especially struck by this gem of reasoning and the judgment passed on our technical support.

“Vembu relies on help from their few service providers to offer support.”

Merely the fact that there are technical posts in our forum doesn’t mean that we rely on partners to resolve technical queries.  What matters is that most of our partners think otherwise.  We in fact enjoy the healthy debate and learning opportunities created by these forum threads.  I pray that similar galloping sallies of mental reasoning such as the above haven’t creeped into to the inner workings of the RBS software.

“My customers like it that way, and actually pay to have access to it (the forum).”

Tee Hee.  Here’s where I started seriously thinking if he had been just pulling the readers’ legs all along.

What prompted me to write this post after a good deal of deliberation is this fact – I have reason to believe somebody from RBS personally plagued our technical support and partner relations teams today.  For one, our technical support faced an unusual query on our internal processes on a support ticket coming from one rob@remote-XXXXXX.com.  Next, one of my colleagues in the partner relations team received a call with inquisitive queries on our internal process from someone who towards the end of the call claimed to be the ‘President of Remote-Backup Systems’.   I fail to see how this qualifies as ‘great entertainment’ or even a good sport.

P.S. We value legal copyrights and have used only paid images in all of our marketing collateral including our blogs.   Another example of jumping the gun in concluding something adverse on Vembu.

P.S.2 Let us focus on the product and servicing our partners and let the market decide who deserves to be in business.

Prevention is Better than Cure

Friday, December 11th, 2009

.

Pardon the cliche. In the context of data, backing up is ‘prevention’. Shipping your mangled/wet/smashed/puked on hard drive to a data recovery company is ‘cure’.

I came across an interesting story from the ‘cure’ side of the data protection business. eWeek is running a slideshow feature based on Kroll Ontrack Data recovery’s compilation of the top 10 data disasters they saw in 2009. The list is interesting. Here’s a summary of the underlying causes behind the top 10 disasters:

Surely, your customers don’t enjoy the prospect of paying huge amounts of money to recover priceless data. More importantly, (for obvious reasons) the data recovery list above doesn’t include the most common reason for laptop data loss – losing the laptop, itself. For example:

12,000 laptops are lost in US airports every WEEK. Read more…

10,000 devices are forgotten in London cabs every MONTH. Read more…

Really, it’s a lot easier to just backup! Make sure your customers know that.

Where does Vembu Home fit…in the grand scheme of things?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

where does it fit in

We’ve been in business since 2004. Our Service Provider Edition has been available since early 2006.

Our flagship product, StoreGrid runs on over 100,000 computers, and is ‘under the hood’ of about 1,500 service providers across the globe.

StoreGrid is also ‘under the hood’ of our new Vembu Home service.

So, why are we launching our own service?

Are we (shudder) planning on competing with our own service providers? Are we changing our business model?

No, and no.

Hopefully, the following points will place things in perspective…

  • We’ve been squarely focused on ‘business backups’ so far. This focus will continue – in fact, it will become a LOT stronger.
  • We’ve been focused on Service Providers so far. We will be even more focused on service providers, going forward…
    • Last week, we released v3.0 of our Service Provider Edition. If you thought the v2.x had enough features, v3.0 is v2.x on steroids and red bull! And it is built only with Service Providers in mind. The big news with v3.0 was reseller & customer management, Webservices APIs for integration with service providers OAM systems, etc. Almost all of these are features that are ‘useless’ to Vembu Home. We wouldn’t have a team ten times the size of the Vembu Home team working for months on v3.0 SP Edition if we didn’t ‘want’ service providers.
    • To emphasize our commitment (to Service Providers) any more, we’ll need to run around screaming “service providers, service providers,…” like someone you know did – for developers. That’s not our style (and we don’t have Axillary Hyperhidrosis).
  • Vembu Home is built atop the StoreGrid engine – with a consumer-ish, iPhone inspired UI – and a strong consumer focus, to match. The consumer focus is reflected in its focus on backup to local disks, and Amazon Cloud Backup for consumer data. Once we are out of private Beta, our EULA will also reflect this – that Vembu Home is only for Home users, NOT for business users. Does this model work? Can a company do this successfully? AVG Anti-Virus is a good example – running on over 80mn computers, over $140mn of sales, and a valuation of $800 mn.  And yes, they also have a free edition that rocks – and a booming distributor & reseller channel that’s making profits. My kids run their free edition on their laptop; my own copy was purchased from Maptech, a VAR+MSP in Chennai. By the way, I just found out AVG are HQd in little Cyprus (lovely country for a holiday). Anyway, I digress… I’m not saying we’re doing exactly the same as AVG – just that ‘new business models’ that were previously unfathomable – are now ‘happening’ and are ‘possible’.
  • YES! The Vembu Home UI will, at a later date, be made available to service providers too – to offer to their customers. In fact, since the EULA (will) allow only for ‘home usage’, business users will primarily be getting their ‘slice’ of Vembu Home – through our channel partners! Vembu Home is still young – it’s in Private Beta. At this time, we are looking for adoption – and feedback. Once all the smooth edges have been further smoothened, we will offer our partners the option of using the sexy, hot Vembu Home UI with their customers. And once we’ve done that for some time, we will also offer branding options. Build-O-Matic (our automatic build generator used by most of our partners) was not built for Flex+AIR. It was built for our browser UI (we were the first to have a browser UI all the way, by the way). We need to reinvent the wheel (rather, Build-O-Matic) here. Reinventing a wheel takes time.

So, honestly speaking, what do we hope to achieve with Vembu Home?

  • Building a Brand, for one. We want our partners to be able to go to a customer and proudly say they’re using a “Vembu Powered Solution”. Vembu Home is one way to facilitate this – by building the brand equity for the Vembu+StoreGrid franchises. Since Vembu Home is also “powered by StoreGrid”, partners who are using a “Powered by StoreGrid” badged (advanced co-branding) UI will hopefully walk a little taller. And honestly, it really gets our goat when another vendor introduces a feature we’ve had for some time – and the net-o-sphere behaves like it’s the best thing since sliced bread. We shake our heads in disbelief and go “If only more people knew what we do”. Vembu Home is an effort in that direction (towards making us stop shaking our heads in disbelief)
  • Second, Experience. Putting our money where our mouth is! In spite of powering the backup business of 1,500 providers, nothing beats doing it yourself – to understand pain points of your partners. Besides the software part, this also helps us build our capabilities in Cloud hosted backups. Next time a service provider asks us “does this Amazon thingie really make sense for my kinda business” we can look at him squarely in the eye and answer him accurately – hopefully.
  • Thirdly, new opportunites: Since Vembu Home is much better than all the backup software that (sometimes) come bundled with External Disk Drives, we’re also hoping to land a few OEM deals with Hard Drive manufacturers who really care about how their customers derive value from their hard disks. So, that’s another objective behind Vembu Home. If you are a hard disk manufacturer, please try Vembu Home. Then, contact us.
  • (It’s cliché time) Last & certainly not the least: MARKETING. Having a consumer ‘angle’ allows us to do ‘things’ we typically wouldn’t do – with just a B2B product. Wait till you see our “Cloud Cloud Maybe” parody video to know what I am talking about. Trust me, it’s worth the wait. We’ll be doing a lot more ‘crazy things’ we wouldn’t have done earlier. Vembu Home affords us the canvas to do so. Heck, we even have FaceBook pages for Vembu Home & StoreGrid. Vembu Home tweets; so does StoreGrid. And I’m getting my ear pierced, my arm tattooed, and riding a Segway to work! Scratch that last bit.

Basically, a lot of it boiled down to ‘building our brand’. Honestly, we don’t believe there’s a lot of money (yet) in the way consumer backups are currently pitched. We  believe the existing leading consumer backup services are bleeding – and bleeding bad. Especially with their unviable ‘all you can eat’ models that spend 4X to get a customer whose lifetime value is X. There are many examples of companies that can afford to bleed! Typically, they are acquired by companies that have other priorities, highly funded or bored with what they’ve done for years and looking for new stuff to do.

And we – with our ‘boring’ business focus? We’re doing well (could always be better :-) though) with our focus on businesses. Thank you very much! And we recently started making some profits and reaping off those years of sowing (development). And…we still believe business would be much, much, much better off using a service provider for their backups – especially if they truly care about the data on their file servers, exchange & SQL/MySQL servers. Especially, businesses who want to do online backups. They are better off doing it through a local trusted service provider, who provide more personalized managed services, rather than to a vendor who cannot afford to provide personalized managed services. The reason is simple:  Backup is not Skype. Business Backups require continuous monitoring and management which only a focused IT service provider can provide. No mass market vendor can provide that. Vembu Home will help us improve our brand and ‘business’ business – through service providers.

We also believe online backup doesn’t work for everyone & for all data. Hence the FREE local backup approach for Vembu Home. Of course, we hope the FREE bit will help build our brand – a la AVG. In fact, we will be taking elements of this approach (free / local / online / cloud etc) into a strong reseller play ‘model’ that we’ll be unveiling in a few months – it’s heady stuff. I know that sounded vague. I’d love to tell more but if I did at this time, I’d have to shoot you. Stay tuned for more on “Operation BoDerek”.

I think that about covers almost all we had to say. Any longer and this will be a book on Amazon.com

Thanks for reading. Still have questions? Feel free to post them below, and we’ll do our best.

Vembu Technologies partners with Caringo

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

We’ve been talking to the folks at Caringo for some time now, and have been playing around with each other’s products at our respective labs. We’re now glad to ‘formally’ announce our alliance! A detailed press release can viewed here and a ’solution page’ explaining the joint solution in more detail is available here.

If you’re short on time, here’s a summary:

You can now store your (backed up) data in your own Cloud or clustered storage using Caringo CAStor. With the help of CAStor you can convert any in house x86 hardware to a clustered storage device. Storage clusters can be built on blades, towers, PCs and servers.

The integration of Vembu and Caringo technology delivers a robust online backup solution for service providers and distributed organizations looking at data protection for remote office locations.

You’ll be seeing a lot more of this – StoreGrid supporting leading cloud platforms. We launched our Amazon ready solution recently, and will be announcing another couple of partnerships very soon; watch this space!

Meanwhile, here’s a brief video that explains some more about the “StoreGrid+Caringo” solution…
